A four-day Wine Tour of the Rioja Wine Region £750.00 (single supplement £150.00) Thursday 4 May to Sunday 7 May 2017
This holiday is now full-up but please e-mail us if you would like to be included on a reserve list.
Rioja is without doubt the most famous wine of Spain and one of the world’s finest red wines. The region is situated in the north-west of the country, against the backdrop of the Sierra Cantabria mountains, not far from Bilbao. Rioja is home to excellent gastronomy which complements its famous wines, and a perfect destination to enjoy wine, food, culture and breathtaking landscapes.
We will be based in the town of Logrono, legendary for its tapas bars and lively nightlife. Over the course of 4 days we will visit a number of wine producers, some traditional, some more modern, but all produce top quality wines. And we also hope to squeeze in some of the region’s culture and history with visits to a monastery and to a medieval hilltop town.
Thursday 4th May: Join the group at Bilbao airport at 11.30 am where a coach will meet us for a drive to our first appointment, the family winery Remelluri in the village of LaBastida. Here we will have a tour, tasting and lunch.
Late afternoon we drive to the town of Logrono, the capital of the Rioja region, and check into Hotel NH Herencia, our base for the next 3 nights.
Friday 5th May: After breakfast we rejoin our coach and drive the short distance towards the town of Haro, which has a number of traditional wineries. We will visit 2 of these and have lunch at one. On our shortlist is Muga, Roda, La Rioja Alta and Lopez de Heredia. Late afternoon we will head back to our hotel in Logrono and this evening is free to sample more of the tapas bars and restaurants in the old town.
Saturday 6th May: After breakfast we drive to the villages of Samaniego and Briones, to visit two boutique producers, Valserrano and Miguel Merino, where we will meet the owners and winemakers, and have a tour and tasting. Lunch will be at a local restaurant.
Sunday 7th May: after breakfast we check out and today we will visit two more wineries – a family winery and then an extraordinary modern gravity-fed winery, built on several levels into the hillside, where we will also have lunch. Late afternoon we drive back to Bilbao airport and check in for our flights back home
